any on you folk near the marin area every see a badger out in those parts? i almost squished one goin south on Novato blvd. as i swerved into the opposite lane it took up most of my lane. my first thought, besides oh crap, was WTF  badger, but thought in this area, no way. it was long 3-4', low to the ground, had no tail that i saw. thought it might have been a family of possums but it all moved as one and didnt move like a possum.

They are all over Marin. Mainly if you go north from Hicks Valley towards Tomales. When I used to go up to my buddy's ranch in high school we would pick them off as much as we could because the holes they burrow create a huge hazard for cattle and other livestock. They are mean and will charge you if you tick them off. they also smell like nothing you have ever smelled before.

It was a couple of yrs ago now but my Dad and I saw a porcupine (sp) at the top of the road to yorty creek. We stopped got out of the truck and watched this critter cross the road and down a hill...was a trip! Have never seen one since. That was cool...

Badgers are really nice if you run toward them and try to pet their bellies. They really like that!

Hello, One injured badger was taken from the North Novato area to WildCare a year and a half ago.  They are not plentiful in Marin, although one poster said they were everywhere - that simply is untrue.  The first post visual doesn't sound like a badger.  Badgers have tails about the same length as raccoons, are larger than raccoons, have black and white distincly marked striped fur on their head and faces and are about 2x the size of a large raccoon generally.

There is a breeding habitat 100 years old in West Petaluma.  There are infrequent sightings of badgers on large agricultural or protected open space lands in Sonoma County.

They are people-shy and want nothing to do with people.  A female will proetct her young in a nearby burrow fiercely.  Since this is a hunting and fishing web site, understandably the interest in badgers is probably not necessarily appreciation of the species and/or preservation of a diminishing species.  Nevertheless, hopefully this informationis clarifying.

A few years ago I was walking by the wild animal both at the fair grounds.  They had a taxidermist badger.  Our local badgers are not the Black and White ones that you see on TV.  They are a tan  They Said that there are a ton of badgers in the area.  We don't see them because they only come out at night and they are under ground most of the time.

I happen to live among active American Badger habitat and close to the breeding habitat described in my earlier post on this site (West Petaluma).  The description I provided is based on sighting and photographing.  The tan taxidermied badger is more representative of other mid-Western states.  I have seen one.  The living badger in Sonoma and Marin counties is what I have seen.  These posts are also based on 10 years of experience of habitat observation and monitoring, along with badger sightings.  This is a rare experience in the Bay Area - and that's why I felt it was important to post on this sight something actual and true - to add to the conversation of conjecture and myth.

Also, agency officials are not well versed in American Badger in northern California.  There aren't "tons of badgers" - it is true badgers are nocturnal.  But, the appearance of several burrows can be deceiving.  For example, you may see a series of 5 freshly dug burrows - but those are likely made by 1 badger.  A badger will dig a fresh burrow nightly.  They follow the foragnig trail.  The chosen forage of badgers primarily includes gophers, voles and mcie - so they are very effective at natural control of gopher populations.  Only one biologist in the North Bay and one biologist in the South Bay in Sonoma County have expertise in American Badger.  Neither of these is with Dept. of Fish and Game or USFWS and both provide information to help the agencies.

That's strange, I have seen a lot of badgers in my lifetime, all in western sonoma and marin county. My family has been in Marin going on 120 years now and badgers never seemed that rare. Just like Coyotes, bobcats and even mountain lions you don't always see a ton of them but there are more out there then you think. When I was growing up badgers posed a threat to cattle and other livestock as they tear up pasture and create burrows that break legs and make open land look like mine fields. They can also tear up a chicken coop and other small animals. Most of the badgers we saw were at dusk and we must have found them at a bad time because even if you drove within 30 yards of them they got super pissed and would even charge an ATV or jeep. Once again I am no expert on badgers and never plan to be, I can only base my opinions on personal experiences. By the way, how far back did you have to dig to find this thread? good luck with your badger research...

Don't get too excited about new 30 rounders boys. The 30 rounder Mike saw was most definitely a 10 rounder dressed as a 30 rounder. And Class III stuff will never legally see the light of day in CA for us "little people". Sad but true.

Mike, you saw a bastardized AR15 with what looks like a 30 round mag, but it is permanently blocked and pinned to only hold 10 rounds. You can get a CA legal AR, but it has to either have a permanently fixed 10 round magazine that accepts stripper clips, or have what is known as a "bullet button", which is a replacement for the magazine release button that requires the user to use a tool to remove the magazine. Most can be operated with a round, hence the name. I think you can still use 30 round magazines in those rifles if you possessed them prior to 2000, but double check that before you go crazy with old GI magazines.

If you have a rifle that was registered with the state prior to the stupid ban, you can still have a regular mag release and all the old standard stuff, but the registration is closed, so nothing new will be getting registered. Now your only option is a 10 round fixed AR15. Are our state politicians awesome, or what?
