I'm with Trev on this one. I like sound when the water isn't clear. It help the fish find the bait I think. No rattle when fishing clear, but I will change that every so often just to try to fish out of the box.

I like this discussion, very interesting to see how guys view the subject. I one time heard Rick Clunn talk about over stimulating the fishes senses. If the fish can see the bait, feel the bait with the lateral line and perhaps smell the bait sometimes they can be turned off if the bait is the wrong size, color or if its making noise that prey usually does not make. This would be a clear water situation obviously.. I usually feel the same way about jigs as most of you that have posted, when I am dragging them I will rarely use rattles but when I am flipping them I sometimes will. I would assume dragging the jig is not really considered a reaction bite. I would consider a Flipping a jig as more of a reaction bite in my mind but not as much as a loud lipless crank blasting in front of the fishes dome. I for one just need to use jigs more often especially now that the jig bite is turning on. Thanks for the debate guys, its full of useful info!

I think you are thinking of the "hula". although similar to the jig its considered a grub and made by Gary Yamamoto....

If they are "only a fish" and they seem to be so dumb how come they outsmart most of us a majority of the time???

Jigs are for girley boys.  I'll never use one.  Especially one of those silly Iwamoto jigs.

yeah i dont think bass are smart enough to do algerbra and stuff put they are hard to fool, and thats why i dont like live bait, becaus your feeding the bass not fooling it. for me finding bass is not the problem, its finding the right bait and presentation

One of my theories about bass fishing is you want to be dumber than a bass because if your smarter then your going to get away. It is bait fish or crawdads that don't move to fast or are not very educated that get eaten. Once they figure out this and become educated/smarter then they will be able to evade predators. So, be dumber than a bass and you will catch them. Just something to think about.
