I was there 2 days ago and there where fish on the surface everywhere seeming like they were gasping for oxygen. I have read about this happening before in other bodies of water. I saw a ton of dead crappie, bluegills, carp, catfish, some bass and some shiners. Saw a TON of bass, crappie, and bluegill fry on the surface struggling but didnt find many small ones like that dead. Not exactly sure whats happening there but it kinda sucks to see. I think they should put aerators/fountains in there to keep it aerated or some aquatic plants too do the same, restock it possibly... I know some people were thinking of doing a clean up there I'd be glad to help out when that gets figured out.

That sucks.  It's amazing that little pond had so many big fish in it.

I know yall are busy with the Classic, but I went to Robert's Lake today to check it out for myself and sure enough, saw over 30 dead bass, almost all along the golf course side. Most bass were between 3-7 pounds with a couple in the 8-10 pound range, and 1 bass in the 12+ range!!! A FAT MOTHER!!!! Saw over 10 dead golden carp in the 10-15 pound range too! Sure is sad to see fish that big dead!!! Would have loved to catch and release just one of those bass! Fish of a lifetime, just floating on the surface!!!

It takes A LOT to kill a fish that old!!!  Doesn't it???  IMO Something major went wrong!  I can still see 10 pound golden carp swimming still, so does that mean there are still big bass in there??  That's a lot of big bass taken out of the food chain in that small pond!!
Can even see a lime greem film in the middle of the lake; not sure what that was.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the highway construction?  Or maybe the ph is off, or pollution just hit a boiling point????  But something's up!

Thoughts??

Any word from DFG??

I actually had a buddy go there and surprisingly catch and 4lber on a crankbait... wierd. I feel it has something to do with oxygen since the ducks arent dying from the water... im not sure though, could be that highway construction. I hooked about a 12+ a few weeks ago and lost it. That might be her you saw. It really sucks seeing all those fish dead. I hate to see that pond go to crap.

Read this:  http://fishing.about.com/od/fishfacts/a/fishkills.htm
When I was there fish were all over the surface in the a.m. and then later in the day they kinda disappeared. I saw what looked like them gulping for oxygen.

I also wanna know if DFG has checked it out.

maybe its got something to do with all that garbage floating around in the lake,  that is a damn shame and people that litter should not be ever aloud there fishing or not fishing.  Or maybe something to do with the golf course having chemicals runoff into the lake

Its not the chemicals from the golf course... I dove all the golf course lakes and believe me, the bass, bream and catfish that are in the GC lakes are alive and well....

Thanks Mike, I contacted the Press Democrat and sent pictures to the local editor today.  So we'll see.  The amount of garbage in there is pretty ridiculous!  I caught 3 plastic grocery bags on my spinner the other day!  What does it take to do a clean up??  I'll hop in my tube with a garbage bag and make a day of it!  Can I do that on my own or do I need approval from the city or??  Are tubes even allowed in Robert's lake???  Not sure I even want to get in that water, but I've got waders so I'm game to do a clean up anytime!!!!  I'll even throw a fast sinking 8" BBZ on straight braid and drag the bottom for trash, & HOPING TO GET LUCKY!!!  Either way, that lake needs a clean up badly!

What would cause the fish to die?
What would cause the oxygen level to change to a deadly level?
What else would it be?

http://rohnertpark.towns.pressdemocrat.com/2012/10/news/cause-uncertain-on-roberts-lake-death-toll/  Maybe someting will be done, but I highly doubt it. Not a resource people care to notice since it is not important to them and does not directly effect their being. If it was found out that there is toxic effects in the ecosystem and it could directly effect humans then something would be done. For now, we will probably just have to except it, afterall it could just be a natural occurance that happens every year, but then again it could just be a reflection of the toxic society we live in today. Hmmm--but I wonder why a certain green algae is showing up at places like Spring Lake or Clear Lake that can potentially kill small animals or pets. Now it time to take notice before these treasures are taken away for ever!! Just my spare change.

Well the fact that Tom Kelley said, “the water is doing its natural seasonal turn over,” is true. But, this natural turnover would never kill the amount of fish that is appearing now. I have fished this pond for years, during this same time, never seeing dead fish anywhere near the amount that is appearing now. Obviously, something is different. Never in the recent past has a fish kill occurred there like this.
John McArthur said, “Roberts Lake is not designed for habitat. The fish population has built up over time, but no species will live there that long.”The fact that there are 12lbers in there is proof that the pond is healthy, and if a fish kill like this had happened before, there would be no fish anywhere near that size. And not only Largemouth Bass, but large Carp and Koi are also dying, check the pictures. This year is different, and the fact that it seems like it is just being ignored is wrong. The pond is not that large, so to have that amount washing up on shore is alarming. Have the pond checked out correctly, and lets see if we can fix the problem. If aeration is the problem, I cannot imagine that it would be too hard to add a fountain or two, or even aquatic plants. (And hopefully it is as simple as that). I would be happy to talk with the Press Democrat some more if they would like.

2 airators placed in the lake like they use at the golf courses would be ideal, but the city and the county is broke, along with the state, so nothing will be done. It will have to come from the private sector, and thats only if you can get the city if RP to even bring it to a vote in the city council....
