There will be a Teen Resource Fair at the Santa Rosa Junior College on Saturday 4/12 from 8:00am-3:00pm. Purpose of the event follows.
Independent City Teen Resource Fair in concert with Sonoma County Family Services and SRJC Independent Living Program. They are looking for volunteers for all or part of the day.
There are 550-600 foster children in Sonoma County. Each year, 65 kids turn 18 years old, which is when State funding stops, and youth must fend for themselves with VERY little life skill training or experience. After family or group home, youth can go to Tamayo House that has 29 beds, but funding has been reduced from $1200 to $300, so times are tough. County statistics on Teenage Mothers indicate:
15-17 yrs. 12.4% per 1000 (124)
18-19 yrs. 38.8% per 1000 (388)
Independent City Teen Resource Fair is an annual event that provides life’s basics in 6 hours. The design is intentionally chaotic, and the day is busy, hectic, and completely rewarding. Youth are encouraged to finish high school and are given a "Life Packet" to help them understand how to navigate through daily life - - finding roommates, establishing a budget, job seeking skills, paying bills and maintaining a check book, and registering to vote.
